Collectors are known to garnish federally protected funds such as SSI funds and who is helping out to recover it, nobody. One must be rich to hire a lawyer and if the debt collector can get away with tricks to steal your money they will. They have a 100 people calling to collect money on commission but the debtor if he pays is not likely to get credit for it, just more torture. South Carolina law against garnishment of wages code #15 39 420 I am pleased to learn that South Carolina has a law against garnishing wages so all they can do is aggravate you with phone calls but you can stop them by sending them a written notice to Cease to Desist and you do not need an attorney to write, sign and send to them. If I understand the law correctly it would also cover pay day loans from being garnished. Remember it costs an average of at least $5,000 to sue somebody and collection is rare.
